Day 1

Leave Kagoshima for Amami Oshima!

The ferry for Amami Oshima from Kagoshima Shinko Port leaves at 6 PM daily. Be sure to check in an hour before departure. Your sea voyage begins once you get your ticket from the counter and go through check-in!
*Kagoshima Honko Port (North Pier) is the port of embarkation for Amami Route 2.

Day 2

Appreciate the sunrise and the islands from the deck.

After the ferry leaves Kagoshima in the evening, it makes its way to Amami Oshima in the night. As the dusk lingers longer in the summer, you can enjoy the sunset and the scenery of Kinko Bay. A canopy of stars illuminating the darkness will cloak the ferry at sea as darkness descends, and you will see the sunrise turn the sky flame-red at dawn. The ferry arrives in Amami Oshima’s Naze Port about 5, at dawn.

The vast woodland park is where you will see plants, wild fowls, and insects native to Amami. It is a designated Class 1 Special Area of Amami Gunto National Park. The vast nature park has trails from which the delights of nature can be enjoyed in all four seasons, including Taiwan cherries from January to February and fireflies in the summer. The park has three observation decks, and the magnificent 360-degree view from the tallest deck (Dragon Fort) is sure to captivate the beholder.

Sweet treats made exclusively with Amami’s natural ingredients

The sweet treats created by the owner, whose family runs a tankan (similar to tangerine) farm, are made with fruits packed with the tropical sun’s goodness. They are appealing for their superb flavor that maximizes the quality of the ingredients. The shop also sells various preserves made with choice ingredients, including Amami’s brown sugar, ginger, and salt. All products are handmade without additives.

Enjoy learning about Amami’s culture while having fun

The exhibition center introduces the Amami Islands’ beautiful natural surroundings, diverse culture, and history through visual exhibits. It comprises two facilities; Amami-no-Sato, which serves as a forum for exchange, and the Tanaka Isson Museum that showcases the works of Isson Tanaka, a painter who dedicated himself to capturing Amami’s natural beauty. It is an excellent place for small children to learn the islands’ folk songs and rare ecosystems through engaging installations.

Day 3

A mystical emerald green plunge pool

The mysterious waterfall is in Amami Forestpolis, a woodland park in Mt. Yuwan full of subtropical plants. It is known on the island as Materia Falls, meaning “a stunning plunge pool of the sun,” because of the dazzling sunlight that shines on the basin’s surface. The waterfall sparkles exquisitely in the sunlight in the dense forest, and the cooling ambiance soothes the souls of visitors.

Commune with Amami Oshima’s mother nature on the islands’ highest peak, Mt. Yuwan.

Amami Islands’ highest peak, Mt. Yuwan, is 694 meters above sea level. It is a habitat for many rare animals, and the area around the summit is a national park’s special protection zone. The view of Yakiuchi Bay and islands studding the sea from the observatory park is stunning and also worth seeing at night.
*The mountain is in southwest Amami, and you can climb it from either Yamato or Uken village, but it is the Uken side that offers the view of Yakiuchi Bay. Please call for details about how to get there and trail conditions.

A fishery company owns the restaurant, and it receives a daily shipment of fresh seafood from Koniya in the south of Amami. The popular Yanigawa eatery serves fresh fruits of the sea and is frequented by discerning islanders.

Board a ferry from Naze Port at night

The daily service from Naze Port to Kagoshima leaves at 8 PM (Amami Route 02) and 9 PM (Amami Route 01). After you have had a day of fun, get ready to travel, and finish the preparations for boarding the ferry early.
*You are recommended to complete the boarding procedures an hour before boarding.

Day 4

Enjoy the sunrise from the deck and breakfast at sea.

On the ferry that sails to Kagoshima through the night, you can enjoy the sunrise from the deck and the view of Sata Cove and Sakurajima on the Osumi Peninsular-side, and Mt. Kaimon and Kagoshima city on the Satsuma Peninsula-side. The restaurant onboard serves breakfast for those wishing to eat before disembarking.

You will soon arrive at Kagoshima when you start to see Sakurajima. Pack your belongings and get ready to disembark. You will have a smooth exit if you have your boarding ticket ready, as you will be disembarking from a specified exit.
